The former imperial country seat now provides an atmospheric setting for trips back in time into the fascinating world of the Baroque.
The Baroque ensemble of Schloss Hof Estate extends over more than fifty hectares. Built for the legendary military commander Prince Eugene of Savoy, it was subsequently remodelled and extended under Empress Maria Theresa to become the largest rural palace complex in Austria. A stately residence, elaborate terraced gardens and a tranquil estate farm form an ensemble that offers a unique combination of imperial magnificence and rural idyll. Today it hosts events and festivals for the whole family as well as annual temporary exhibitions.
The palace
The magnificent interiors of the palace convey an impression of imperial lifestyle. While Maria Theresa and her son Emperor Joseph II indulged their penchant for neoclassicism, Prince Eugene has returned to take up residence on the bel étage with the help of state-of-the-art exhibition technology and various objects and stylistic elements from his times.
The gardens
During the eighteenth century it was the Baroque gardens, laid out on seven terraces descending gently to the River Morava, that evoked even more admiration than the palace itself. Then as now, formal flower beds, romantic pergolas and richly decorated pools and fountains provide an idyllic refuge for restful hours.
The estate farm
One of the largest Baroque estate farms in Central Europe contains idyllic themed gardens such as the herb garden, the ‘help-yourself’ soft fruit garden and the Weinviertel garden, and is a refuge for many heritage breeds of domestic animals from Austria. In the Bäckenhof an interactive exhibition in the newly opened Children and Family Adventure World brings to life the everyday activities of Baroque times.
